The once grumpy-looking tabby received numerous adoption requests from interested individuals when the feline’s PetFinder profile gained popularity through a tweet shared on Thanksgiving Day.

Social media has been instrumental in finding a new home for Fishtopher, a five-year-old rescue cat with a love for chin rubs. After a tweet from @mollyaclarke shared his Petfinder bio, which revealed that he would only eat when he had company and was feeling sad and depressed, Laura Folts and Tanner Callahan drove 100 miles to New Jersey’s Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center to adopt the furry feline. The couple arrived an hour before the center opened and competed with eight other potential adopters to win Fishtopher’s affections. The shelter said that hundreds of animal lovers had contacted them about the chubby tabby cat.

Folts and their partner had high hopes of adopting Fishtopher from the Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center, despite knowing that there were other cats they had also considered online. They arrived early enough to be the first ones but were pleased to find out that Fishtopher had already been adopted. The Baltimore couple later discovered that the shelter had wished Fishtopher well on Facebook and subtly reminded potential adopters about the other animals still waiting for homes. Fishtopher is now settling into his new home in Maryland, and his new owners have even created a dedicated Twitter account to continue his story.
